Enter the scribe

Okay, I’ll admit it. Writing is how I got through college, landed jobs I probably didn’t deserve (or want), won friends and influenced people. A blank piece of paper or a computer screen unadorned by the written word have long been my playgrounds of choice.
The first column I was granted by our city newspaper was something I wrote to impress my employer at the time. Unfortunately, the idea was too far outside the box for them to value it. But it led me down the path to become a professional scribe, so I am ever-grateful to have had the opportunity.
It has not been a cake-walk decision to go it alone as a writer, forcing me to dig deep into my psyche with a lot of positive self-talk. At first, as prospective clients began to surface, I hit nagging little fear zones that caused pesky little devils to sit atop my sweat-shirted shoulder: “What if you can’t write knowledgably about this topic?” Or the little demon would query, “Will quoting too high a fee or charging to small a fee (devaluing your services just because you need the money at the time) lose you the job?” ; “What if they don’t like what you write?”
Then I was to find those fears to be patently silly. Why? I found out that other people were more afraid of writing something terrible than I was of writing something they wouldn’t like. As for fees, you create your own value. And so it goes.
