My iPad2..

My iPad 2 has become my new best friend

My iPad 2 has become my new best friend.

Whoever said us “old” people cant’ figure out technology? I am here to tell you, no matter your age, you can still learn!

My 81 year old father and my 70 something mother (you’re welcome mom!) have learned to navigate this digital age.

So I say- NO EXCUSES!

I must admit, I am a “bull in a china shop!” I have a tendency to drop things- Well, maybe more than a tendency!  And as many of you know, (since I complained all over Facebook about it),  I did drop my first iPad2 only 4 weeks after purchasing it. I was heartbroken. I had become so attached to this piece of technology that I almost broke out into a cold sweat! Apple was kind enough to replace my IPad- Thank You Apple!

Now I keep my life in this portable unit. No matter where I am, I can access the internet and do presentations about my business! I read books, keep my calendar, watch movies, access Facebook and email. And those are just a few examples of what you can do with these tablets.

Six Smartphone Apps That I Love

August 2, 2011 in Mobile Devices, TechSavy

Dennis Carpenter

Here are the Smartphone apps that I use almost everyday.

1. Google maps. Everytime I go to a new or unknown location, I use Google Maps. Google Maps utilizes GPS tracking (which is already built into your Smartphone) technology enabling you to always know the exact directions to your destination and your current location. Some of you  may know, I really hate being lost and this app keeps me on a sure course!

You can use Mobile Google Maps for navigation, directions, street view of a location, traffic reports and to find a local business.

Here is a video produced by Google that explains all of this apps features.

2. Mobile Facebook. Simply said, this app does everything you need to do on Facebook. A great way to keep up with your Facebook notices and conversations on the go!

3. Sending pictures. I utilize Facebook’s Mobile app to share the pictures that I take on my smartphone. Instantly! Yes, you can configure your phone to automatically send the pictures you take on your Smartphone to either a public folder or a private folder on Facebook based on your privacy selections. No uploading,  no transferring or resizing because these functions are automatic with this app.

4. I love an app called “TuneIn Radio“, a free app that is available for download in both the Android and IPhone App store. The app streams (plays) any radio station that broadcast a stream over the internet. The app has an easy tuner, allowing the user to search for stations by genre or location. Additionally, the app also allows the user to save presets of their favorite radio stations for later play. You can even utilize this radio app as an alarm clock or as a bedtime companion by setting the built-in a sleep-timer to turn the radio app off after a pre-determined listening period.

iPad 101

July 27, 2011 in Mobile Devices, TechSavy

Bob Steelman

Right now, I am composing this blog post on my new iPad. An anniversary gift from my Nancy. As if having her in my life is not gift enough; but if she wants to give me an iPad to boot, who am I to complain.

So, this new tool (no, I will not call it a toy) aside from being way cool, has taught me some lessons about the person I appear to be evolving into.

I have had a computer pretty much surgically attached to me for the last 11 years. As a writer, and a telecommuting one to boot, it came with the territory. So, when I first received this, I looked at it from my old perspective. How would I use it for writing I wondered? Should I buy a wireless keyboard to make it easier for word processing? I actually did pick one up yesterday and you know what…it hit me square in the face that writing is not my main focus anymore and may never be again.

A Must Do! Download Your Facebook History

July 11, 2011 in Social Networks, TechSavy

Your Facebook Archive

Do you know that you can quickly download everything you’ve ever posted on Facebook?

Yes you can! An easy download feature provided by FB,  will provide you with an offline archive of all your messages, Wall posts, photos, status updates and profile information!

To get started, just login to Facebook and click on the Account link at the top of the page. Then select on “Download Your Information”. Facebook will compile all of your history on FB and build a Zip file to download. This may take a few minutes, so FB will offer to send you an email when the file is ready for download! However, when I tried this “will call” feature, no email was received. When I returned to page however and clicked again, my download was immediate.

Facebook doesn’t allow you to pick and choose what you download. You get everything! Once you download the file, unzip it to a folder on your local hard drive, then click on the index file within this folder. A replica of your FB profile page will open up in your browser with all of your data organized just the way it is on your live FB page, but with local links to your Wall, photos, videos, a list of your friends and all the messages you have ever sent on FB. It is a complete history of your FB activity!
